Beau Blue

5th Avenue Blues

The cobblestones are disappearing.
They're not fast enough
for Harry Hastagetthereinahurry.
He flies on rubber bands
And wants the furry circus city streets
To conform to black and slick.

Oh, I have seen his progress pad its way
Up summer asphalt sticking
blackly to the bottoms of my feet,
And breaking winter axles
In its slushy pothole madness,
And fracturing the fix-it traffic in the spring.

I, for one, would rather have
A character of texture string
the slideshows to the soda shops to back home again.
But Harry can't be stopped to listen
And the cobblestones and bricks are disappearing
In the Hastagetthereinahurry rush.
